What is Theophostic Ministry?Theophostic ministry is defined as bringing God’s (Theo) light (phostic) to areas of our lives that are still in the darkness of wounds, lies, and misbeliefs. In the counseling setting, the Lord is invited to take us to places in our memories where there is unhealed or unresolved pain. Jesus then helps us to see what lies we may still be believing as the “truth” about ourselves and the circumstances. Among common beliefs we hold as “truths” are: “I was a bad girl”, “Nobody cares”, “I can never change”, “God doesn’t love me”. Jesus shows us something or speaks a word to help us come into true healing and release. He reassures us He is there and has always been with us. He will not change our history, but He opens our understanding to see and hear Truth. Theophostic is not just an intellectual discussion of our pain, it is letting down our defenses against the pain, bringing the Lord into our woundedness, allowing Him to comfort us, and helping us come to a place of seeing the circumstances in a new and truthful way. He may speak such truth as “It wasn’t your fault”, “You didn’t make her do that”, “You were just a child”, “You didn’t know.” True healing comes when our wounds are no longer triggering us back to places of pain that cause us to behave in unhealthy ways in the present. Without healing of past wounds, we tend to perpetuate the very thing we try to escape: repeating and experiencing the pain of the past.
